Rider Band Wear and Rod Drop: When to Replace Before Damage

On horizontal reciprocating compressors, the rider bands carry the weight of the piston as it moves along the cylinder. They are designed to wear so that the piston body never touches the liner. When they are worn out, the piston drops, the rod is pulled out of line, the packing starts to leak, and in the worst case the piston scores the cylinder. A liner or piston costs far more than a set of rider bands, so the aim is simple: replace the bands on plan, never by failure.

How wear is measured

At an opening. With the piston out, rider band thickness is measured and compared with the new dimension and the OEM wear limit. With only the cylinder head removed, the clearance above the piston can be checked with feeler gauges; as the bands wear, the piston sits lower and this top clearance grows.

While running. Rod drop monitoring uses a proximity probe under the piston rod near the packing. As the bands wear, the rod position moves down. Trending this reading shows the wear rate and predicts when the limit will be reached. Where no permanent probe is installed, rod position can be checked with a dial indicator during a planned stop.

What makes rider bands wear fast

  • Liquids or solids in the gas.

  • Too little cylinder lubrication on lubricated services, or the wrong band material on non-lube services.

  • High discharge temperatures that soften the band material.

  • Misalignment between the cylinder and the crosshead guide.

  • Worn crosshead shoes or excessive crosshead clearance.

Planning replacement

Use the measured wear rate, not a fixed calendar, to set the replacement date, and combine it with other planned work on the same cylinder, such as valve or packing jobs, to avoid a separate shutdown. When the bands are replaced, record the new thickness and reset the rod drop baseline. If wear was faster than expected, find the cause before the unit goes back into service.
